Tritronics provides online parts sales for nearly all Sony MD gear. (Follow Shopping->Consumer login)
Sony Components at one time had brief parts brochures for MD audio manufacturers (the Sony pages are gone and have subsequently been hosted locally, for purposes of illustration only), giving English information on MD optical pickups, loading units, mechanism kits, magnetic heads, and spindle motors. All their component brochures make interesting browsing.
Folks in the UK can order hard-to-find spares for the Sharp MD-MS702 from Willow Vale Electronics in Reading.
TOSlink transmitter/reciver modules can be ordered from Force9 in the UK (search for "TOT").
Simon Corner has a data sheet for Sharp's tx/rx modules.
Reichelt.de is a good source for inexpensive optical transmitters, receivers and cables (search for LWL TOS in the search entry).

Hero Electronics sell Optical Transmitters and Receivers for home-constructors who wish to build convertors. Hero are currently offering the GP1F32T for GBP 8.75 and the GP1F32R for GBP 10.25 or both together for GBP 12.40. There is a delivery charge of GBP 2.50 for addresses outside the UK:

If you live in northern Europe, try out Elfa in Sweden. They carry a tremendous amount of electronic stuff, similar to Maplin UK.

You also need a 8.2 kOhm resistor for the transmitter. They also have two mini-size transmitter and receiver modules, which don't require any plugs, you just plug the wire in directly. [email protected]
