Abstract In a recording and reproducing apparatus which is capable of recording and reproducing table-of-contents information to be used in making a search for the contents of a record on and from a recording medium which is used for recording and reproducing main information, the table-of-contents information recorded on the recording medium is reproduced in response to loading of the apparatus with the recording medium and is stored in a memory; and the table-of-contents information thus reproduced is erased from the recording medium.
