After a few weeks of owning my new MS200 I was very tired of titling my music using the little volume up/down buttons, and actually a little concerned that these buttons might wear out with the heavy use I was making of them. I figured that if the Sharp portables used a remote control scheme similar to the Sony units (i.e. switching different resistances for each function) and if the recorder had support for buttons on the remote control that weren't present on my particular remote (especially ENTER and CHARACTER/TIME), then it wouldn't be too difficult to build a computer titling system similar to the infrared ones made for minidisk decks. After doing a little investigating, I had to conclude that this wouldn't really be a practical way of titling minidisks after all, mostly because Sharp portables don't seem to have as many functions available (or potentially available) as the Sony portables do. So, presented here is the information I collected before giving up on the project. I hope someone can make use of it.
Although I don't think a computer titler would be
very useful, especially because of the lack of a remote ENTER button, I'm
considering building an enhanced remote control with a jog dial to make
manually titling minidisks a little less painful and time consuming.
If anyone has any suggestions for this, please let me know!

*These functions aren't present on the standard
MS200 remote control; I managed to discover them with a little experimentation.
Remote Resistance is the resistor value found in the remote control. Total Resistance is the resistance as "seen" by the MS200. |
